The PEAR Method

Simple Guidelines for Active Listening

Effective active listening helps children and adults feel heard, understood, and respected. The PEAR method provides a clear and practical framework for guiding listening interactions in a supportive and empathetic way. By paraphrasing what is said, encouraging continued sharing, paying full attention, and reflecting feelings, educators can strengthen communication, build trust, and support problem-solving. These guidelines help shift conversations from correction to connection, creating a foundation for positive guidance and mutual understanding. Just remember PEAR

P: Paraphrase the facts

  • “So you want to go to the party and your parents won’t let you.”
  • “You thought we were going to meet at your house before going to the rally.”

E: Encourage the other person to talk

  • “I’m willing to listen to your side.”
  • “Do you want to talk this out?”

A: Pay Attention

  • Look at the speaker
  • Encourage them by nodding or other positive signs

R: Reflect feelings

  • “You sound upset about not being able to go to the party.”
  • “How do you feel when she says those kinds of things?”
