Developmentally Appropriate Practice

Introduction

This chapter is a simple, short overview of the important principles that should guide all that happens in early childhood education. Principles that underlie any area of importance in the education of young children tend to be universal ones that are directly relevant to guidance. Our approach to guiding children and managing their behavior should be based on these principles.

  • Explain the importance of supporting the “whole child” and how this influences positive guidance.
  • Discuss the central role of play in DAP and its connection to both learning and behavior guidance.
