Social Emotional Learning
Introduction
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a foundational component of effective elementary education, shaping how children understand themselves, build relationships, and navigate the world around them. In kindergarten through fifth grade, students are developing critical skills such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, responsible decision-making, and interpersonal communication. These competencies not only influence classroom behavior and peer interactions but also play a significant role in academic success and long-term well-being.
For future elementary school teachers, understanding SEL is essential for creating inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environments. Research consistently demonstrates that students who participate in high-quality SEL programs show improved academic performance, stronger social skills, and reduced behavioral challenges (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning [CASEL], 2023). In addition, SEL supports classroom climate by fostering a sense of belonging, safety, and mutual respect, conditions necessary for meaningful learning to occur.
In K–5 settings, SEL is not a separate subject taught in isolation; rather, it is integrated throughout the school day. It is embedded in morning meetings, cooperative learning activities, conflict resolution practices, and even academic instruction. Teachers model SEL through their interactions, language, and responses to student behavior, making their role critical in shaping students’ social and emotional development.
This chapter explores developmentally appropriate strategies, instructional practices, and classroom structures that support SEL across the elementary grades. It emphasizes culturally responsive teaching, inclusive practices, and the integration of SEL into daily routines. By the end of this chapter, preservice teachers will be equipped with practical tools to foster emotionally supportive classrooms where all students can thrive.
Learning Objectives
After completing this chapter, students will be able to:
- Define Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and explain its importance in K–5 education.
- Identify the five core competencies of SEL (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making).
- Describe how SEL supports academic achievement, behavior, and overall student well-being.
- Demonstrate culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches to supporting SEL.
- Collaborate with families and colleagues to support students’ social and emotional development.
