Phonics Lesson Practice

  1. You’ll need the phoneme chart and sand tray.
  2. With a partner practice (one is the teacher the other is a student):
    • Teacher: sound is /b/
    • Student: writes with a pointer finger the lower case letter b in the sand.
  3. Repeat with 6 phonemes and switch

Sight Word Practice

  1. Gather your supplies
    1. Half sheets of paper
    2. Textured surface (needlepoint plastic sheet)
    3. Crayon
  2. Practice leading your partner through the 3 steps:
    • Write the word
    • Put it under the sheet and trace
    • Tap the word along your arm
  3. Do this with the words: said, their and thermometer.

Sight Word Lists

  • Created by Dr. Edward Fry in the 1950s, the Fry List of 1,000 high-frequency words are ranked in order of difficulty and frequency of use. Additionally, they are organized into groups of 100 words each.
  • The Dolch list, developed by Edward Dolch in the 1930s and 1940s, contains 220 service words and 95 nouns that are commonly found in children’s reading materials. Within each grade, the words are ordered by frequency.
  • Common internet searches will unearth these lists for your review.

Literacy Lesson Plan and Dialogic Reading

With a partner you will create a lesson plan using the Dialogic Reading technique

Materials

  • Children’s book (kindergarten to 2nd grade level)
  • Sticky notes
  • Appropriate lesson plan template.

With your partner:

  1. Read the book
  2. Choose a Common Core ELA standard
  3. Choose 3-5 key words to pre-teach
  4. Fill out the lesson plan and include dialogic questions to your procedure
  5. Write the questions on sticky notes

With another partner group you will take turns giving your lesson to practice delivering dialogic reading lessons.
